If you haven’t heard the term Feng Shui when it comes to decorating then you simply aren’t watching all the do it yourself shows on television. The term is dropped as often and as easily as names are dropped in a Hollywood press conference. So what exactly is Feng Shui and what on earth does it have to do with decorating. The funny answer is that the literal translation for Feng is wind and Shui is water. Perhaps that is why so many people are suddenly using wind chimes and water fountains for focal points in their decorating. The premise behind the modern interpretation of Feng Shui is harmony although many people are finding it to be absolutely superstitious. My personal take is that if it makes you feel good and feel better about your surroundings go for it. No one in New Orleans throws out their Christmas tree before the 12th night and many buildings simply do not have a thirteenth floor. In other words, no one really has room to call anyone else superstitious, we all have our little superstitions whether we admit to them or not. Regardless of personal beliefs or superstitions Feng Shui is certainly taking decorating to new levels. There are an abundance of home decorating shows on television that have adopted a Feng Shui approach to their decorating. You can find these shows on almost any Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If you are serious about bringing Feng Shui into your home and using it as it was intended don't worry about whether your sofa faces north east just keep in mind a few things about color. First, Feng Shui is oriental in origin; western culture often assigns different meanings to different colors. More importantly than that, however, is the fact that there isn’t a one size fits all. If you are decorating your home according the Feng Shui tradition, the best Feng Shui tip I can give you is to choose colors that set the tone for that area in your house. Use colors that you find empowering in the career corner and colors that make you feel vibrant and alive for your health area. Also remember that this is your home. Choose colors that you enjoy. It makes no sense to have a home that is designed to help various aspects of your life if you don’t feel comfortable enough to spend any amount of time in it.
